Calcium is the most abundant mineral in the body. Though it seems like everyone is supplementing their diet with some form of calcium, most people are deficient. Your body can’t process calcium if you don’t have enough magnesium and you can’t absorb calcium without ample stores of vitamin D. You need vitamin K to regulate your blood calcium. And if you don’t have enough calcium, you won’t be able to process zinc. If you don’t have enough zinc, you won’t be able to process vitamin A.

Too much calcium can reduce the effectiveness of vitamin A and magnesium, and can cause anxiety (while too little causes depression). Also, people taking too much (and the especially wrong kind) of calcium are calcifying their soft tissue. And if your diet is acidic, your body is going to pull minerals (especially calcium) from wherever it can get it (teeth, bones, organs, etc.) to keep your blood at its proper, slightly alkaline pH (read more about this in Acid vs. Alkalinity).

To make the issue more confusing, most of the calcium supplements on the market are not digestible. Some of them are downright toxic; they can cause kidney stones or a host of other problems. Got milk? Well, throw it out. You and your family don’t need to be drinking that toxic soup of antibiotics, pesticides, and bovine growth hormones. Even if you buy organic milk, it’s a dead pasteurized food. Besides, although milk does contain calcium, even the Harvard School of Public Health questions whether it’s the best source.

That’s just calcium. We could go on and on with every other vitamin, mineral, or other essential nutrient in similar fashion.

Vitamins, minerals, essential fatty acids, and most of our other nutrients are all about balance. Growing strong and healthy bones is not as simple as taking a calcium pill. Let’s take a look at other vitamins and minerals to see what some of their roles are.

Minerals are found in rocks and soil. Plants get their minerals from the soil in which they are grown. If you grow the same vegetable in the ground year after year, the ground becomes deficient in the particular minerals that vegetable needs for development. Consequently the vegetable becomes deficient and so do the creatures that depend on it for nutrition. Through crop rotation, we replenish the soil. This is why crop rotation is so important.

Vitamins and minerals are necessary to sustain life and must be obtained from food because they are either not made in the body at all, or are not made in sufficient quantities. Even if you only eat organic, remember big business has joined the industry and is now growing organic foods, using mono-cropping methods (without crop rotation). The organic label does not guarantee that produce was grown in nutrient rich soil. GMOs are invading organic fields and contaminating organic seed stores and the FDA has just authorized irradiating lettuce and spinach (regardless of whether or not it is organic).

While it was previously stated that we should consume five to nine servings of raw fruits and vegetables per day, the National Academy of Science now states that we should double that amount due the decreased nutrient content of our food. But compared to 50 years ago, many foods don’t have 50% of their former nutrition; they have 10% or less. In addition, toxins so easily accumulated in our modern society, require us to consume even more nutrients for optimum health.

Obviously it can be very difficult to get enough vitamins and minerals from the foods we eat, and though that is exactly how we should get our vitamins, supplementation has become a necessity for optimum health. That said, don’t ever fool yourself into believing vitamin supplementation is a substitute for a healthy diet. Your body needs a diet filled with the healthiest foods available. Vitamins alone have no energy value. They can’t be assimilated without food. Choose whole food vitamins, not synthetic chemical reproductions (there are very few exceptions to this rule in the world of supplementation), and eat plenty of raw, fresh, organic fruits and vegetables. Other than growing our own organic food, this is the best we can do.

Some vitamins and minerals have specific preventive and therapeutic effects when taken in larger amounts. For example, niacin can be used to lower cholesterol and vitamin B6 is very useful in treating premenstrual syndrome. But never take a singular B vitamin for any length of time; take B complex. Studies have proven that taking one B vitamin alone seriously depletes the others. And many doctors don’t know this! But this warning is actually true for all vitamins and minerals in general.

Large doses of vitamins and minerals may slow, or even reverse many diseases previously thought to be an inevitable part of aging such as cancer, heart disease, osteoporosis, impaired immunity, nerve degeneration, and other chronic health problems. Many experts consider larger doses of some vitamins to be necessary for optimum health. While OLM firmly believes that people should be fully responsible for their own health and strive to learn everything they can about how to heal and be healthy, we strongly recommend that significantly large doses of vitamins and/or minerals should only be taken under the supervision of a knowledgeable health care practitioner.

A lot of alternative health care practitioners recommend a hair mineral analysis to determine what minerals a person needs. A lab will analyze a sample of your hair and tell you which minerals are in your system, their ratios, and which heavy metal toxins you have accumulated in your body. Using your hair analysis as a guideline, your alternative health care practitioner will tailor a supplement program to get you body in balance and help you eliminate your accumulation of heavy metal toxins, while teaching you how to avoid heavy metal toxicity in the future.

There is some debate as to the reliability of hair analysis as a viable test for minerals, though the alternative health community does agree the test is accurate for heavy metals. All agree it is imperative to use a competent lab.

It is important to detoxify, as toxins can impede your ability to process vitamins and minerals. And detoxifying can “reset” your minerals and vitamins. Many detox programs require a juice fast, while others limit the foods you eat. Whichever detox program you choose, make sure you don’t rob your body of nutrients during the process, whether you are doing a “radical” detox or just a gentle cleanse. It is also imperative that your diet be alkaline, not acidic. You will never come close to optimum health with an acidic diet, no matter how many vitamin and mineral supplements you consume.

Once you get your body balanced properly, it becomes much more efficient at digesting and assimilating vitamins and minerals. Provided your body is not toxified, you will easily pull much of what you need from the foods you eat. You can then supplement your diet with a good whole food multivitamin/mineral for optimum health.

In fact, green tea has been used for medicinal purposes in China for at least 4,000 years and it is growing in popularity in Dallas, Houston and throughout Texas.

These days, scientific research from all over the world is providing hard evidence for the health benefits long associated with drinking green tea. A recent issue of the Journal of the National Cancer Institute published the results of a study that showed drinking green tea reduced the risk of esophageal cancer in Chinese men and women by nearly 60 percent. In a recent study, University of Purdue researchers concluded that a certain compound in green tea inhibits the growth of cancer cells. And there’s newer research showing that drinking green tea lowers total cholesterol levels, as well as improving the ratio of good (HDL) cholesterol to bad (LDL) cholesterol.

According to recent research studies in the West and in China, the medical conditions for which drinking green tea is supposed to be of help include:

Green tea is different because of the way it is processed. Green tea leaves are steamed, preventing the EGCG compound from being oxidized. By contrast, black and oolong tea leaves are fermented. This results in the EGCG being converted into other compounds that are not nearly as effective in preventing and fighting various diseases.

New evidence has also emerged that green tea can even help people in Dallas, Houston and elsewhere in Texas who are on diets. The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition recently published the results of a study at the University of Geneva in Switzerland. The study found that men who were given a combination of caffeine and green tea extract burned more calories than those given only caffeine or a placebo.

Green tea can also benefit your smile by helping prevent tooth decay. Just as the tea’s bacteria-destroying abilities can help prevent food poisoning, it can also kill the bacteria that cause dental plaque. The researchers focused on whether EGCG had the ability to block the activity of two potent molecules, IL-6 and cyclooxygenase-2 (Cox-2), which play a role in breaking down bone in an RA joint. The study found that the two molecules were suppressed by the EGCG. While it is difficult to quantify exactly the effect of the suppression, the EGCG “blocked them significantly,” according to Ahmed. EGCG also blocked the production of prostaglandin E2, another compound that can cause joint inflammation.

This new study is one of the first to focus on the benefits of green tea on rheumatoid arthritis, which could be good news for rheumatoid arthritis patients, offering a non-drug option to keep their pain under control.

While the research is not yet conclusive and more study is needed, Ahmed said people might want to try drinking three or four 8-ounce cups of green tea per day. “Try different brands,” he suggested. “The flavors may taste slightly different. Drink it continuously throughout the day,” he said, to keep blood levels more constant.

It can be caused by trauma to the urinary tract or by infections originating from other parts of the body. A patient may experience testicular pain, lower back pains and urination problems. Although it is uncommon, it can be treated by removal of the prostate defect followed by the use antibiotics and NSAIDs to treat the inflammation.

Non-bacterial prostatitis accounts for approximately 90% of all prostatitis cases; however, researchers have not yet to establish the causes of these conditions. Some researchers believe that chronic non-bacterial prostatitis occur because of unknown infectious agents while other believe that intensive exercise and heavy lifting can cause these infections.

Lung Cancer. This killer cancer stubs out more men’s lives than the next four most common cancers, namely colon, prostate, pancreas, and leukaemia, combined. This year, 45 men in 100,000 will develop the disease. Ninety per cent of all lung cancer cases in Singaporean males occur among smokers. Don’t smoke? Spending two hours in a smoky bar can affect your lungs as much as puffing away on four cigarettes, so limit your exposure. And eat more apples. A study in the International Journal of Cancer showed a big decrease in the incidence of lung cancer among those who ate apples and pears.

Impotence. According to a study reported in the Singapore Medical Journal, 51.3 per cent of Singaporean men have some degree of erectile dysfunction (ED).

Yet, even though a mere 5 per cent of men under 40 can’t produce wood on demand, you obviously fear what lies – or flops – ahead. And rightly so. In addition to established anti-tumor therapy, several new treatments
have recently been developed:

1. Halaven (eribulin) – approved by the FDA in November 2010, this sea-sponge-derivative is indicated for treatment of metastatic breast cancer in patients who have previously received a anthracycline and taxane
anti-tumor therapy.

2. Faslodex (fulvestrant) – a selective estrogen receptor down-regulator (SERD), and is approved by the FDA following antiestrogen therapy for hormone receptor-positive metastatic breast cancer in postmenopausal women with disease progression. Although initially, the approved dose of fulvestrant was 250 mg administered once monthly, the FDA has recently approved a higher dose of fulvestrant 500 mg monthly based on positive results from two studies.

Progress in Gastric Cancer

1. Herceptin (trastuzumab)- in metastatic gastric cancer, the biologic agent trastuzumab has been found to increase survival in patients with tumors that “overexpress” the HER2 oncogene. Trastuzumab was found to significantly improve overall survival in one study.

Progress in Pancreatic Cancer

Small-Molecule Targeted Therapies are non-biologic (synthetic)agents that have shown promise in certain pancreatic tumors. These agents target a number of cellular growth factor receptors, many of which function as tyrosine kinases, and the mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR). Randomized trials have shown benefit from two such molecularly targeted agents: sunitinib and everolimus.

1. Sutent (sunitinib) – an orally active tyrosine kinase inhibitor for certain advanced pancreatic tumors. Sutent was administered in a placebo-controlled randomized trial of 171 patients and was associated with a significant six-month prolongation in median progression-free survival.

2. Afinitor (everolimus) – an mTOR inhibitor that was associated with a significant six-month prolongation in median progression-free survival in a placebo-controlled trial of 410 patients with a certain type of advanced, progressive pancreatic cancer.

Progress in Colorectal Cancer

Mutations of the KRAS proto-oncogene is an essential step in the development of many cancers. KRAS acts as a molecular on/off switch, and can activate or inhibit growth factors involved with malignant cell growth and proliferation. A single amino acid nucleotide substitution can activate a KRAS proto-oncogene mutation which are associated with resistance to the anticancer drugs Vectibix (panitumumab) and Erbitux (cetuximab). These agents target the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR).

1. Erbitux (cetuximab)- a large retrospective study has shown that patients with a “p.G13D mutation” who receive cetuximab for metastatic colorectal cancer, survived longer than did those with other K-ras mutations. Patients with a “p.G13D mutation” responded to Erbitux moderately well, and had an overall survival comparable to that of patients with wild-type K-ras.

The Truth About Bladder Cancer

To begin with, each year, about 67,000 new cases of bladder cancer are expected, and about 13,000 people will die of the disease in the U.S. Bladder cancer affects three times as many men as women. Women, however, often have more advanced tumors than men at the time of diagnosis.

Bladder cancer can occur at any age, but it is most common in people older than 50 years of age. The average age at the time of diagnosis is in the 60s. However, it clearly appears to be a disease of aging, with people in their 80s and 90s developing bladder cancer as well.

Firstly, the bladder is a hollow organ in the lower abdomen (pelvis). It collects and stores urine produced by the kidneys. Cancer occurs when normal cells undergo a transformation whereby they grow and multiply without normal controls.

As the cells multiply, they form an area of abnormal cells. Medical professionals call this a tumor. As more and more cells are produced, the tumor increases in size. Tumors overwhelm surrounding tissues by invading their space and taking the oxygen and nutrients they need to survive and function.

Of all types of cancer, bladder cancer has an unusually high propensity for recurring after treatment. Bladder cancer has a recurrence rate of 50%-80%. The recurring cancer is usually, but not always, of the same type as the first (primary) cancer. It may be in the bladder or in another part of the urinary tract (kidneys or ureters).

Bladder cancers are classified (staged) by how deeply they invade into the bladder wall, which has several layers. Many physicians subdivide bladder cancer into superficial and invasive disease. Superficial bladder cancer is limited to the innermost linings of the bladder (known as the mucosa and lamina propria). Invasive bladder cancer has at least penetrated the muscular layer of the bladder wall.

Nearly all adenocarcinomas and squamous cell carcinomas are invasive. Thus, by the time these cancers are detected, they have usually already invaded the bladder wall.

Many urothelial cell carcinomas are not invasive. This means that they go no deeper than the superficial layer (mucosa) of the bladder.

Of the different types of cells that form the bladder, the cells lining the inside of the bladder wall are most likely to develop cancer. Any of three different cell types can become cancerous. The resulting cancers are named after the cell types.

In the United States, urothelial carcinomas account for more than 90% of all bladder cancers. Squamous cell carcinomas make up 3%-8%, and adenocarcinomas make up 1%-2%.

Urothelial carcinoma (transitional cell carcinoma) is by far the most common type of bladder cancer in the United States. The so-called transitional cells are normal cells that form the innermost lining of the bladder wall.

In transitional cell carcinoma, these normal lining cells undergo changes that lead to the uncontrolled cell growth characteristic of cancer.

Squamous cell carcinoma originate from the thin, flat cells that typically form as a result of bladder inflammation or irritation that has taken place for many months or years.

Adenocarcinoma cancers form from cells that make up glands. Glands are specialized structures that produce and release fluids such as mucus.

These three types of cancer can develop anywhere in the urinary tract. If abnormal cells are found anywhere in the urinary tract, a search for other areas of abnormal cells is warranted. For example, if cancerous cells are found in the bladder, an evaluation of the kidneys and ureters is essential.

Furthermore, a tumor grade is based on the degree of abnormality observed in a microscopic evaluation of the tumor. Cells from a high-grade cancer have more changes in form and have a greater degree of abnormality when viewed microscopically than do cells from a low-grade tumor.

Papillary tumors are urothelial carcinomas that grow narrow, finger-like projections. Benign (noncancerous) papillary tumors (papillomas) grow projections out into the hollow part of the bladder. These can be easily removed, but they sometimes grow back.

These tumors vary greatly in their potential to come back (recur). Some types rarely recur after treatment; other types are very likely to do so. Papillary tumors also vary greatly in their potential to be malignant (invasive). A small percentage (15%) do invade the bladder wall. Some invasive papillary tumors grow projections both into the bladder wall and into the hollow part of the bladder.

In addition, bladder cancer can develop in the form of a flat, red (erythematous) patch on the mucosal surface. This is called carcinoma-in-situ (CIS).

Although these tumors are superficial, they are high-grade and have a high risk for becoming invasive.

How Should Cauda Equina Syndrome Be Treated?

Cauda Equina Syndrome must be treated with decompression surgery, as this is the only way to effectively relieve the nerves from pressure. This operation should be performed as soon as symptoms begin to present. If there is a delay, serious questions must be raised as to why treatment was not provided sooner. Treating cauda equina syndrome

Cauda Equina Syndrome is when the bundle of nerves at the bottom of the spinal cord becomes compressed. This may happen because of, for example, a slipped disc or a spinal tumour. A patient should be sent for an urgent MRI scan and, if spinal nerve compression is detected, a suitable course of treatment decided upon.

In the majority of cases, emergency decompression surgery will be required to relieve the nerves. But if compression is being caused by an inflammatory condition, antibiotics should be administered. Similarly, if a spinal tumour is present, a cancer care plan must be devised.

What happens if cauda equina treatment is delayed?

Whatever the most suitable course of treatment, it must be provided without delay. This is because the cauda equina nerves can become severely damaged within a very short space of time. If they are compressed for too long, the injury will be so extensive that a repair will prove largely in effective, thereby leaving a patient with permanent neurological complications. This may include total or partial paralysis, constant pain, and the inability to urinate without a catheter.
